Gabriel García Márquez, the Nobel Prize–winning author of One Hundred Years of Solitude and Love in the Time of Cholera, among other beloved literary works, passed away in 2014 at the age of 87. As we near the 10th anniversary of his death, his sons Rodrigo and Gonzalo García Barcha are publishing a book he abandoned at the end of his life. Until August is a brief work, not even 100 pages, and it has been described as unique among the author’s works for lacking the richness of vocabulary that readers around the world find so enchanting about his books. For that reason, some have objected to the book seeing light of day, suggesting that his sons should have done to it what their father used to have them do to all of his abandoned projects: destroy it completely. Even Rodrigo and Gonzalo describe their decision as “a betrayal,” but one they’ve carried out for the sake of “readers’ pleasure.” We’re sure “Gabo” will forgive his boys for it.
