Is Emet North’s debut novel In Universes science fiction? Romance? Is it literary fiction? (Whatever that means.) This story about observational cosmologist Raffi, whose fascination with a sculptor named Britt seems to be picking at the fabric of time and space, explores the age-old question of “what if” by considering the wild chances that separate one universe from the next, distinguish friend from lover, and make up all the arbitrary boundaries in whose absence this becomes that. As much as the whole “multiverse thing” might be feeling somewhat threadbare itself, North approaches it as any speculative conceit should be approached: as if in this iteration of existence, they were the first one to think of it.
