US giant publisher Macmillan, with annual revenue of over USD 500 million, has been hit by a cyberattack. Macmillan editors have lost access to their systems, emails, and files. Book retailers nationwide were unable to place new orders from the publisher. The attack occurred last week with the company shutting down all of its IT systems. According to reports, it also impacted its U.K. branch. The use of encryption in the attack suggests that it was a ransomware attack. However, it is not known what ransomware gang is behind the attack and whether data was stolen. The Active Protection included in Acronis Cyber Protect detects and blocks ransomware, keeping your data safe from encryption or extortion.
