A global team of professionals from all over the world began a mission a few years ago: to digitize historical and archaeological sites in the city of Volterra, Italy using the most advanced technologies available. Architects, engineers, surveyors, artists, and researchers collaborated to document over 40 sites around the city using drones, laser scanning, ground penetrating radar, and other cutting-edge technologies. After receiving an AIA Innovation Award for our efforts, this year we set out to digitize one of the most important historical discoveries in Italy in the past century: a newly discovered Roman Amphitheater discovered accidentally by construction workers.
